Systems Engineer 3 (Systems Safety)

Job Description: Applies an interdisciplinary, collaborative approach to plan, design, develop and verify a lifecycle balanced system of systems and system solutions. Evaluates customer and /operational needs to define and coordinate system performance requirements, integrate technical parameters and assure compatibility of all physical, functional and program interfaces. Performs various analyses to optimize total system of systems and/or system architecture. Performs analyses for affordability, safety, reliability, maintainability, testability, human systems integration, survivability, vulnerability, susceptibility, system security, regulatory, certification, product assurance and other specialties quality factors into a preferred configuration to ensure mission success. Develops the planning, organization, implementation and monitoring of requirements management processes, tools, risk, issues, opportunity management and technology readiness assessment processes. Resolves cross-functional technical issues.

**Specifically looking for an individual with experience executing, in detail, reliability and availability analyses. Additional expertise in maintainability, particularly MSG-3, is beneficial but not required.**

Minimum Requirements
Bachelor's Degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) discipline from an accredited university and 10+ years of system safety engineering experience focusing on
Defect analysis & troubleshooting of aircraft systems.
Service engineering experience in aircraft systems at an airline, aircraft original equipment manufacturer (OEM), or component OEM.
Using technical knowledge databases including IBM Rational DOORS.
Root cause analysis (RCA) and Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) methods, Failure Modes and Effects Criticality Analysis (FMECA) practices, and corrective action development.
Familiar with industry standards for hardware and software certification, including but not limited to FAA Type Certification under 14 CFR Parts 21, 23, 25 27, or 29; RTCA DO-178C; RTCA DO-254; SAE ARP4754A and SAE ARP4761.
Expertise in MIL-STD-882E (DoD System Safety Standard Practice) and SAE ARP4761 (Guidelines and Methods for Conducting the Safety Assessment Process on Civil Airborne Systems and Equipment).
Expertise in MIL-HDBK-516C (DoD Airworthiness Certification Criteria) and RTCA DO-178C (Software Considerations in Airborne Systems and Equipment Certification).
Familiarity with Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs)

Desired Requirements
Experience with the use of formal methods in safety certification
Experience with STPA/STAMP
Experience using Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) methods and tools
Demonstrated experience working with a tailored Systems Engineering approach
Familiarity with military airworthiness certification processes (MIL-HDBC-516C)
Familiarity with civilian certification processes (RTCA DO-178C, SAE ARP4754)

Scope of Open Role
Duration 6 months to start
Is this role FAA compliant? No - this would potentially support a program that is using 14 CFR Parts 23 and 25 and guidelines but will not undergo formal FAA flight certification
Contract only or Contract to hire? We are open to contract-to-hire if things work well about 6 months and the business need is still there
Are you okay with out-of-state candidates?: Yes, but we may require them to do periodic travel
Work Location Address: 9950 Wakeman Drive, Manassas, VA
Work Schedule/Shift Expectations: 40 hrs/wk over five days. Hrs/day can be flexible.
Expected OT? None, but it is possible that it might be required at some point.
Would this person need to be 100% onsite, or any remote opportunities?: Remote
Reason for the need (increased work load, backfill, MLOA, etc.): Surge in staffing demand that was not able to be filled by Aurora fill-time hiring.
Will this role require local Citizenship/Green Card?: Yes
Will the contractor be expected to travel? If yes, how often?: Potentially, on demand for program meetings, etc.
Is this an SCA roles? no
Clearance? If yes, what type and do they need this prior to starting? No clearance required.

Manager who will be interviewing candidates: Myself (L-level manager) plus at least one of my direct reports (K-level manager) and perhaps an individual contributor

What types of questions will be asked in the interview? Mix of behavioral and technical questions to understand the candidates skills, expertise, and capabilities
